Is servicing my car at the dealership mandatory to maintain my warranty?

If you’re under the impression that servicing your car at the dealership is mandatory to maintain your warranty you are not alone! A recent Choice survey indicated that around 50% of Australians are also under this impression.

As long as your car is serviced by a qualified logbook mechanic in line your manufacturers service schedule, your warranty is intact.

The ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) states that the manufacturers warranty is a promise to the consumer that the vehicle will be free from defects for a certain period of time. It does not state that in order for this warranty to be intact you must have it serviced at the dealership it was purchased from.

How to make sure your warranty is not void·

  • Make sure you choose a mechanic that is qualified to complete logbook services. This is the norm these days but if unsure it is always best to double-check.
  • Ensure your services are completed in line with your cars maintenance schedule. This is generally every 10,000kms or 6 months (whichever comes first) but does vary from manufacturer so it is always best to check your logbook service booklet.
  • Make sure your mechanic stamps your logbook on completion of the service.
  • Get an itemised receipt of the work that was carried out and the parts used when servicing.

When could my warranty be void·

  • When you miss a service entirely
  • When non genuine or comparable parts have been used
  • When your service isn’t documented

There is no risk to your warranty as long as qualified mechanics use genuine or comparable parts and you stick to your service schedule.
