Is Paint Protection on a New Car Worth It? (Ceramic vs PPF vs DIY)

New car day is exciting, and the upsell chat about “paint protection” often starts before you’ve even got the keys. So, is it worth it in Queensland’s harsh sun? Short answer: yes, if you pick the right product for how you drive and care for your car.

What “paint protection” actually means

  • Sealants: Entry-level protection that lasts months, not years. Easy to apply, modest durability.
  • Ceramic coatings: A semi-permanent layer that adds gloss, UV resistance and makes washing easier. Great for daily drivers and highway cars.
  • PPF (Paint Protection Film): A clear film that physically absorbs chips and scuffs. Best for high-impact areas (bonnet front, bumper, mirrors, sills) or long-distance touring.

Pros & cons in QLD heat

  • Pros: Better UV protection, easier bug/tar removal after highway runs, slower clear-coat fade, hydrophobic beading after summer storms.
  • Cons: Not scratch-proof. You still need proper washing (two-bucket method, decent microfibres). PPF protects from chips, but it’s pricier.

Dealer package vs independent detailer vs DIY

  • Dealership packages: Convenient, but products and prep can vary.
  • Independent detailers: Often offer higher-end ceramics/PPF and meticulous paint prep (which is key).
  • DIY kits: Cheaper, but surface prep is everything, you’ll see what you miss.

When does PPF make sense?

  • You do lots of highway or rural driving.
  • You tow a boat/caravan (stone spray).
  • You want “fit-and-forget” chip protection on leading panels.

Care and maintenance

  • pH-neutral wash, gentle towels, avoid aggressive wheel acids on overspray.
  • Top-up sprays (SiO2) every few months keep beads strong.
  • Check edges of PPF yearly.
