What Your Dashboard Lights Are Really Telling You

You’re driving along, everything seems fine, and then suddenly your dashboard lights flash. Should you panic? Can it wait until your next service? Or is it something urgent?

Dashboard warning lights are your vehicle’s way of communicating with you. They’re not there to annoy you, they’re there to keep you safe and your vehicle running smoothly. Here’s what some of the most common (and commonly misunderstood) lights are really telling you.

1. Check Engine Light

Possibly the most feared warning light, the check engine light can mean a range of issues, from a loose petrol cap to a serious engine fault. If it’s flashing, that’s your cue to pull over immediately and call for assistance. If it’s solid, book in with your mechanic as soon as possible. Delaying can lead to more extensive (and expensive) engine damage.

2. Oil Pressure Warning Light

This light indicates low oil pressure, which means your engine might not be receiving enough lubrication. Driving with low oil pressure can cause severe damage in minutes. Pull over safely and check your oil level. If the level is fine, it could be a fault with the pump or sensor, either way, don’t ignore it.

3. Battery Warning Light

When this light appears, your vehicle may not be charging properly. It could be a failing alternator, a broken belt, or an old battery on its last legs. If you keep driving, you might soon find yourself with a flat battery and a car that won’t start.

4. ABS Warning Light

The Anti-lock Braking System helps you stop safely in slippery conditions. If this light comes on, it means the system may be compromised. While your regular brakes may still work, the ABS might not function in an emergency stop, definitely something you’ll want a mechanic to look at.

5. Tyre Pressure Monitoring Light

Modern cars are fitted with tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS). This light warns you when a tyre’s pressure drops below a safe level. Driving with under-inflated tyres can affect handling, fuel efficiency, and tyre life. Check and adjust your pressure ASAP.

6. Coolant Temperature Warning

If your engine is overheating, this light will come on. Overheating can cause major engine damage, so don’t ignore it. Pull over, turn off the engine, and let it cool. Check coolant levels once it’s safe, but never open a hot radiator cap.
