Towing a caravan this holiday season?

Queensland’s state borders have finally opened! With Australians opting to holiday at home this holiday season, 2020 is shaping up to be extra busy with more motorists on the road over the silly season. There are a lot of things you will need to consider if you are towing a caravan this holiday season, from loading the caravan properly, hitching and safe driving techniques, as always, its best to be prepared before you set off and understand that this year more than ever, patience on the road is key to a safe journey

Loading the caravan

Loading the caravan correctly is important to ensure it will tow well. Keep the centre of gravity low by placing heavier items near the floor. With some caravans, one side can be heavier than the other due to the kitchen (stove, sink, refrigerator) being down one side of the caravan. You can easily balance this out by loading your equipment on the other side of the caravan. Use lightweight items as much as possible as this will reduce the weight of your caravan and save you money on fuel. In the kitchen, opt for plastic or melamine / lightweight kitchenware that won’t break and line shelving and cupboards with rubber matting which will prevent items from rolling around or moving in transit. Be sure that all loose articles are secured and not left to roll around on the floor.

Hitching the car to the caravan

Hitching up actually looks harder than it is. You can even purchase hitching equipment these days from caravan accessory shops to make the job easier. You’ll need a second person to assist you to hitch up. Make sure the van brake is on and then raise the vans stabilisers. Use the jockey wheel & raise the front of the van high enough for the towbar to pass under. Reverse your vehicle until the towbar is under the coupling. Lower the jockey wheel and connect your safety chain, electrics, load levelling hitch and brakes, then remove and stow away the jockey wheel, release the handbrake before you set off on the road, and last but not least ensure you have fitted extension rear vision mirrors so that you can see the traffic behind and either side of you.

So, if you’re towing a caravan this holiday season remember patience is key, plan for a longer journey than usual and be courteous and safe on Queensland roads this summer.
