5 engine noises that require immediate attention

Some of us are all too familiar with ignoring suspicious engine noises by turning up the sound of the radio. If you can’t hear it it’s not actually there, right? Wrong! Suspicious engine noises are never something you want to ignore or attempt to wish away. If anything, they should be looked at immediately. Here are 5 of them that require instant attention.

1. Ticking noise: The typical ticking sound that comes from the cooling system of a vehicle is usually very easy to find, especially on older vehicles that have been well maintained. When this type of sound happens it means there is a problem with the cooling system and likely a situation where the radiator has been opened up and not properly repaired. If you hear this sound, stop driving immediately and have it checked out.

2. Hissing noise: This sound is typically associated with the combustion process. When this kind of noise occurs it means that something is wrong with your engine, specifically within the valves or cylinder head where the rods are fired. It may also indicate that there is a problem with your fuel system.

3. Clunking noise: If you get this type of noise while driving it means there’s something wrong with your transmission or auto clutch. It could also mean there’s a problem with the axels. Getting out of the vehicle and checking for leaks will let you know which is the likely culprit. If there’s no obvious leak then it’s more than likely that you need to get your transmission looked at by a mechanic.

4. Whistling noise: When you hear this kind of sound it means that there is some sort of problem with the exhaust and/or piston rings, which is something that definitely requires professional attention.

5. High-pitched sound: This is another type of engine noise that is easy to hear and yet very significant. There may be something wrong with the timing chain, piston rings, or even the valve train itself, which can result in severe engine damage during an accident.

Noises can give you great clues as to what issues your car is facing and can help indicate what aspects of your vehicle need altering. If you ever hear anything abnormal, it’s important to pay attention to it. If you’re ever in doubt, give one of our friendly mechanics a call and we’ll be able to help you out!
